The flames and the media have gone now, and so have
the jobs of maybe thousands of people (The local Job
Centre has received 7500 calls since Monday). |
| The explosion measured 2.4 on the
Richter scale. It laid waste to Dixons Head Office,3Com,
Epson,GoldenWest, Asos, Northgate Systems, Kodak, Fuji,
Gillette and countless other businesses in a rough half
a mile radius around the origin. |

These companies employ thousands of people at these
locations, and use local suppliers in their day to day
operations. These companies, in a physical sense and
for the people of Hemel, no longer exist.
As a result, many hourly paid employees and
contractors will not be able to work and earn before
christmas and it is likely that the employers will not
be able to process wages and payments in time. This
means very subdued festivities for many Hemel families. |
| After coping with the shock, damage and
stress of the explosion and its aftermath, many are left
with their jobs in ruins and no money for christmas.

If this is the case for you then:
- work out how much your employer/customer owes
you in back pay or services,
- work out how much you would have earned this
week,
- get your evidence together (invoices, wage
slips, contracts, bills that must be paid)
and get in touch with the right people to register
your claim. |

Urgent action is needed:
- companies need to process payroll and payment runs for
hourly paid employees, contractors and small businesses
up to the date of the event.
- From then on, emergency
assistance or compensation should be provided which
will tide finances over until either new employment is
found or benefits take over.
